Team given love, prayers and potluck

KERRVILLE – With this truth in mind, “A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps” (Prov. 16:9), the church here prayed and spent time with three missionary families on Sunday, Dec. 10. The 14 people on the Sao Luis Mission Team visited this sponsoring congregation in preparation for their upcoming mission move to Brazil.
“We are obedient servants with established families who are answering God’s call to share His love and saving grace with the people of Sao Luis, Maranhao, Brazil,” their web greeting explains. The Justin Hill family: Jill and Caden, Rylee and Addison, join with Mark, Melynda and Jude Dye and the Troy Gibbins family: Lauren, Reef, Jonas, Lachlan and Poppy on this journey.
This fall has been full of changes as the families moved out of their homes, visited with the other sponsoring churches, said good-byes to loved ones, practiced their Portuguese, trained with Great Cities Missions, selected what they would take in the two suitcases allotted to each person and baptized young Jude Dye. In addition to language preparation, the intensive training covered team dynamics, conflict resolution, marriage strengthening and church planting strategies.
During the Sunday visit here, the families participated in several adult and youth classes and fellowshipped with the church during the covered dish luncheon after the assembly. Children’s Minister Rene’ and Steve Bailey are the parents of Jill Hill.
The move to Sao Luis launches a five-year effort to begin a congregation in this city of more than 1 million people. The families plan to get settled, advance their Portuguese language skills and then invite their neighbors in for meals and Bible studies. As the church takes root, they hope to involve their new brethren in worship, leadership, teaching and small groups. Their work will be handed over to the brethren and the elders will guide the church in a permanent location.
The site at saoluisteam.org tells more about the families and provides convenient ways to donate. As events present challenges, the Dye, Gibbins and Hill families and their sponsoring congregations covet your prayers.
