TERRELL – Sharnell James, the San Antonio/Austin area 2016-2017 Southwestern Christian College scholarship recipient, graduated with honors at the 67th Commencement Ceremony on May 12. Generous donations given during the yearly “Evening of Spiritual Harmony” songfest at the Northside church of Christ in San Antonio helped fund the scholarship
Originally from Texarkana, Sharnell worshipped with the San Pedro Church of Christ in San Antonio. She plans to pursue a degree in psychology beginning this fall at the Texas A&M campus in Texarkana.
Currently a summer intern at the Impact Church of Christ in Houston, Sharnell’s vision is to “Serve others with acts of selflessness so that I might continue to grow into the woman of God that He has intended for me to be.” The work includes planning and implementing mission trips, youth rallies, camp sessions, and a service project with the Hemley Street Church of Christ in Bayou LaBatre, Alabama.
The college’s Summer Tour choral ensemble headlines the annual songfest. Former Tour member and 2010 SwCC graduate, Stanley Talbert, Jr., delivered the commencement address.
During the address, he encouraged the graduates to continue running toward even greater success. Talbert has earned a BA from Pepperdine University, a Master’s in Divinity from Union, and is presently enrolled in a Ph. D program at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
Lynette Kennedy, Coordinator of the San Antonio/Austin SwCC Committee and songfest, spoke with Talbert and reports his fond memories of singing in San Antonio with the Summer Tour. She reminds readers to save the date: the next SwCC scholarship songfest will happen on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 5:30 p.m. at the Northside Church of Christ.
