SAN ANTONIO — The West Laurel Street Church of Christ will host the 12th Annual Men’s Retreat in Corpus Christi on Oct. 11-13, Thursday through Saturday. Men from all over South Texas will gather at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 4337 S. Padre Island Dr.
Said Evangelist Joseph Walsh, Jr. “Join us for three days of growth and fellowship! There is no fee for the retreat.”
The newly renovated Embassy Suites offers beds at a modest cost of $119.95 per person when three men to share a room. The price also includes breakfast and the Friday night dinner on the beach. To secure this discount, reserve the room by Sept. 20.
Guest speakers from the San Pedro Church of Christ here will address the theme, “Bridging the Gap.” Evangelist Charles Johanson, Elder Dave Landry, Youth Minister Alfred Huff and Minister Bryon Curry will bring lessons in line with the event’s mission: to fortify men to serve as teachers and leaders at their home churches and to form bonds of respect, strength and growth through fellowship with brethren from other South Texas congregations.
Events begin with the traditional campfire cookout and lecture at Flower Bluff Beach on Friday night. Transportation from the hotel will be provided.
The retreat began in 2006 at Laurel Street through the efforts of Evangelist Walsh and Educational Director Robert Woodard. Three years ago, the church’s current preaching minister, Shawn Price, encouraged extending the invitation to brothers from sister congregations. Last year, 47 brethren and non-member friends from eight local congregations met to encourage and strengthen each other.
The retreat now offers an open invitation to all who desire to have spiritual fellowship in a secluded and unintimidating setting. Each year, attendees have surprised themselves when they discovered hidden skills. Through encouraging one another, the brethren developed formidable bonds that have lasted through the years.
