CORPUS CHRISTI — “Join us for a great weekend!” began Minister Mark Hammitt as he announced an upcoming outreach to the Weber Road church recently. Well-known Minister Freddie Anderson will bring “Lessons on a Special Upgrade” during the Oct. 5-7 gospel meeting.
The series is based on this passage in Hebrews: “Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant He mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises” (8:6 ESV).
The Friday and Saturday sessions begin at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Anderson will speak at the regular 9 and 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. assemblies.
Anderson works in prison ministry out of his Huntsville home base. He has authored several books and travels to encourage those serving or wanting to help in this type of Outreach.

Recently I watched a television documentary titled “Ten Homes That Changed America.” One of the houses it featured was Thomas Jefferson’s famous Virginia mansion, Monticello. The authority commenting on this historic house pointed out Jefferson’s emphasis on comfort in designing every aspect of Monticello. He observed that this term had little meaning to people of the 18th century and before, most of whom enjoyed very little personal comfort, especially by modern standards.
Yet the term appears quite frequently in English versions of the Bible, such as the NIV, although it hardly ever means personal or creature comforts. Instead it usually has the connotation of relief or refuge. In fact, one of the few uses of “comfort” in the modern sense of the word is applied negatively in Jesus’ condemnation of the self-centered rich, “But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort” (6:24 NIV). PECOS — Jorge Perez of Mission and Eliseo Hinojos of Presidio have recently joined the work of the church of Christ here.
According to Fred Dominguez, “We have hired two preachers to work with the church in Pecos. Bro. Perez is working with our Spanish-speaking congregation, and Bro. Hinojos will be working with our English-speaking church.”
The Spanish speakers meet as the Iglesia de Cristo, which is an outreach of the congregation. Perez, their new minister, graduated from South Texas School of Preaching and Biblical Studies in Alton in 1999. He has served churches in the valley and in northern Mexico since that time. He and his wife, Paula, have two children. (more…)

In Matthew chapter 19, disciples and religious leaders were crowded around Jesus. The religious leaders were interested in the legalities of marriage and divorce; Jesus began explaining the differences between legalities, and the matter of the heart.
An interruption came when children were brought for Jesus to lay His hands on them and pray. The religious leaders and disciples were NOT amused. They had important things to learn. But Jesus stopped them in their tracks with this verse: “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of Heaven.”
Heaven belongs to the children? Why? What about us? (more…)
