Love for wounded warriors by Bobbye Porter

SAN ANTONIO — It all began with a visit to SAMMC in the late spring of 2011. We noticed that some of the wounded warriors seemed cold, sitting in their wheelchairs. A group of knitters and crocheters was organized and the eager crafters began meeting at San Pedro on Sunday afternoons. They ranged in age from 9 to 75 years.

Although the group has diminished in size, it has not deterred these women (and one brave man) from continuing on in this good work. Since that time in 2011, over 500 hand-made lap robes (afghans) have been lovingly made for our wounded soldiers at the Warrior Family Support Center at Fort Sam Houston, Audie Murphy VA Hospital and the Kerrville VA Hospital.

The work continues with no end in sight.

Kim still needs a kidney by Paul McQuien

SAN ANTONIO — In the January issue of Christian News of South Texas, we printed an appeal on behalf of Kimberly Shields. She is presently on dialysis several times a week and is desperately in need of a kidney transplant. Her father, Allen Shields, was able to donate a kidney to Kimberly 17 years ago, but now that donated kidney is failing.

Allen recently reported that two people asked for more information, and one person has already been dismissed on account of high blood pressure. Volunteers at her home congregation have been willing to provide a new kidney; however, a suitable donor has not been located.

The Shields family, who are members of the Southwest Church of Christ here, are still hoping and praying that someone with a matching kidney can step forward and donate it to Kimberly.

For more information about donating, or any further questions, feel free to contact the family in these ways. Email: rshields001@satx.rr.com. Home telephone: 210-334-0018. Transplant hotline: 1-800-888-0402.

Northwest supplies Magi envoys

magi-box-2016-nwSAN ANTONIO — When children open a Magi Box delivered to them in the Rio Grande Valley and nearby Mexico this December, they will see a note and/or a Bible verse, and new items. Northwest church of Christ Children’s Minister Carie Whittaker led the effort to pack them along with small toys, school supplies, clothes, personal hygiene items, and a New Testament in Spanish into more than 370 gift boxes during November.

As the Magi visited the Lord and His family at His birth, church members and other volunteers will visit in neighborhoods south of here where the gift boxes will be welcome during this month. Last year, 376 out of the 2,000 boxes given out in the valley came from Northwest.

¡Asiste al culto! (Come worship!)

SAN ANTONIO – In the same way that church members serve quietly among other people daily, their meeting houses maintain a visibility despite the street signs, guy wires, utility poles, electric lines, traffic and other distractions of life. Behind the pole and LED message announcing the times and updates, the smaller sign on the San Pedro building on Jackson Keller Street invites Spanish speakers to attend.

It proclaims, “Te invitamos. Clases y servicio en espanol. Domingos a las 9. Iglesia de Cristo San Pedro www.spcocsa.org” which translates to “We welcome you. Classes and service in Spanish. Sunday at 9. Church of Christ San Pedro http://www.spcocsa.org”

Esteban Mijares and Antonio Estevez preach in Spanish, and Charles Johanson conducts the assemblies in English. They bid all, “¡Bienvenido! (Welcome)!”
